A fistfull of MP3’s

Category: Sounds

Wolf Parade : You are a runner, les nouveaux canadiens imparables de Sub Pop.

Remix kit

Category: Sounds

There is a new Binäerpilot ep released by the 8bitpeople label. It’s called Defrag (well, yes, it’s a bit geeky). What is really nice is that there you can find a remix kit so you can make your own remix (that is, if you use the same software). The whole thing is under creative commons. (on the page linked above there is also an interview of Binäerpilot, not always fascinating but with some details about how cheap his gear is).

In the same thread, I was listening yesterday to “Jogos de Armar”, a cd released by Tom Ze in 2000. A second cd is included with the sourcetracks so you can sample and remix with absolute comfort. And it’s a very good album too.

Good Lord…

I don’t know exactly how this is working, I should find out more, but I have found these little gems, all bits of music that are in the public domain. The public domain for U is a collection of old blues and gospel music, which is no longer bound by copyright.

Freesound

I recently got a tip for another sound database, this one has a creative commons license on all the up-and downloads:

Freesound

It seems to be a project of a University in Barcelona and some dutch people
(I saw it in the names 😉

Staccato : CC music radio show

Category: Sounds

Next to Down With the Chairman, from Resonance, London, and Squarescubed, in Canada, here is another radio program with only open licensed music :

Staccato
Welcome to Staccato, where we feature music that probably won’t get you sued.
All tracks are available under a Creative Commons license. So is the show, of course. “

Spanish algorithm

Category: Sounds

On Play Code, a new spanish netlabel, “Love for MP3” by Spoweck, licensed under Creative Commons :

“Tribute to Internet and its popular format of audio. This disc
supposes an approach to the algorithm experimentation with
the electronics and some elements like
the piano and the guitar.
Like always, the tonica is humor and the absurd thing.”

This obscure definition sounds good to me, as does the record. Here is the text in Spanish. It may be clearer, I don’t know.

common country

Category: Sounds

“A couple of years back, Joseph Chellino (ex-Oval-Teen, Pets or Meat, Paper Airplane Pilots) aka Jonas Crenshaw got it into his head to write a bunch of songs and make a “country” album.
After spending months writing and recording he came up with one of the finest albums of “the genre” and not knowing what to do with the end result (not known for touring), he decided to shelve it. ”

And now, thanks to the netlabel My Mean Magpie, Jonas Crenshaw’s Colossal Failure is available to everybody. Good country music was not really something we were expecting so soon from any creative commoned netlabel. Does anybody know about other good country releases on the net? I would certainly be interested, and this could be good also for those who wouldn’t be caught dead in the country department of their local records shop.

Recommended tracks : Dumb ass heart and Lonesome, crazy, stupid and scared.
